5th Element Martial Arts
What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art. Much like karate, Taekwondo involves combinations of punches and kick. However, unlike karate and other martial arts, Taekwondo is devoted primarily to powerful and rapid kicking techniques (like those used by Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Billy Blanks and almost all of the other “big name” action stars).
Taekwondo in its most primitive form was used as a survival fighting system. It later developed into a complete martial art and was practiced by the common people as well as by the military – emphasising again the body building / sport aspect that has characterised Korean martial art forms since their inception.
Taekwondo however is not just a means of self-defence or a sport… it is a philosophy and a way of life.
5th Element Martial Arts (formerly Bjorns Taekwondo) is based in the traditional art of Taekwondo but incorporates elements of Hapkido, Haidong Gumdo, Ju-Jitsu, boxing and kickboxing to form a mixed martial art.
Here at 5th Element Martial Arts we enjoy the benefit of full contact sparring for those who prefer to mix it up, non-contact sparring for those who prefer to learn the skills without contact and WTF tournament style sparring for tournament competition.
In addition, WTF Taekwondo provides opportunities to test martial arts skill in power breaking competition, speed (board) breaking, Patterns competitions and Creative Patterns. 5th Element Martial Arts (Bjorns Taekwondo) has been very successful in all these elements at state and national levels.
